The First Thanksgiving at Plymouth in 1621

"our harvest being gotten in, our governor sent four men on fowling, that so we might after a special manner rejoice together, after we had gathered the fruits of our labors; they four in one day killed as much fowl, as with a little help beside, served the Company almost a week, at which time amongst other Recreations, we exercised our Arms, many of the Indians coming amongst us, and amongst the rest their greatest king Massasoit, with some ninety men, whom for three days we entertained and feasted, and they went out and killed five Deer, which they brought to the Plantation and bestowed on our Governor, and upon the Captain and others. And although it be not always so plentiful, as it was at this time with us, yet by the goodness of God, we are so far from want, that we often wish you partakers of our plenty."

I have heard that Jean Booth’s broccoli salad is to die for. My wife is making it for our thanksgiving dinner at our daughter house this year. She just loves it!
I believe that there is a “Broccoli conspiracy” happing all around me. I don’t like broccoli! I feel like I am the Jolly-green giant eating trees when I eat it. Sorry Jean I will not eat my broccoli in my plate this year at dinner time! Hope I don’t get sent to my room!

When I go to Siempre our kids home in Mexico, every time I eat with them they have broccoli in everything. The “truth” is that when I pull up in the morning at Siempre they see my jeep and they run to the kitchen to put a pot of broccoli on the stove. So at lunch time they have one of the kids come and get me for dinner, “Pastor Ken, Pastor Ken---“LUNCH” with a smile that say’s “Broccoli”.
I have to be a good example for all those kids, so I eat the entire broccoli in my bowl. I do it---but deep down in my heart I wish I was back in the good-old USA so I can choose not to eat it.

Jean Booth gave me the recipe for the Broccoli salad today. I will pass it on to my wife. Jean is a great cook and I love the other things she makes. I told her if she would give me all her other recipes I would publish a book for her. Thanks Jean! Here is the recipe for the salad from Jean’s Kitchen Cookbook.

Broccoli Salad
2 heads of broccoli –chopped
1 small red onion- diced
1 red delicious apple- diced
½ cup of raisins
½ cup of pecans
12 slices cooked bacon- crumbled
Dressing (mix-up the night before)
1 cup Best Food Mayo
¼ cup of sugar
2 tablespoons cider vinegar
Next week’s recipe will be her Strawberry Spinach Salad.
Don’t like that either! Never did understand why Popeye ate Spinach!

The Wall

McPherson and Agnes Peter came up to our house on Friday and spent the night. We had a great time together and enjoyed going to town for dinner. If you see them at church, say Hi and get to know them. They have some funning stories about their lives. They are from Jamaica and have been here for 10 years. McPherson is a block layer and he had the day off on Friday AND since I have a block wall that was half done—I ask if he could stop by. He took me up on it!

We worked all day Friday on the wall and today while I am writing this blog he is there putting the finishing touches on it. They will stay the rest of the day at my house while I am at working at the church and going to Transions, our Saturday night service. Check out Transions at http://acceptym.com/transitionsblog/

If you would like to stop by—I can find something for you to do. Here at Central Community and my house!

Dirt, Dirt and more Dirt!

I just knew that my back would be sore and my arms would feel like they were ready to fall off. I had a truck load of dirt delivered to my house for my carport that I needed to fill in. 26 tons of dirt would be delivered and I knew the day was going to be me, the shovel and a great big pile of dirt the needed to me moved.
Years ago when I worked in the tile trade we would have trucks with 26 tons of sand come to the jobs sites all the time. Once the driver just dumped his whole load at the bottom of the hill and it needed to be on the top of the hill. We were out of luck! For day’s we pushed wheel barrow after wheel barrow up that hill. Almost died that week!
I made sure the driver on Friday put it in the right shot. I didn’t want to go up any hills. I got most of the dirt moved --24 tons. 48,000 lbs! I ran out of light to finish the job on Friday so either today or on the morning I will move another 2 tons. Not bad for an old man!
If you have never moved dirt before I have two more truck load’s coming. You could come and move 52 tons of dirt! 104,000 lbs. It will make you buff and lean!
Go move something today!
