Black and White
My Uncle Carlos from Oklahoma sent me the following.
I don't remember most of the black and white world as he did. I am not as old as he is.
He has a birthday on August 24 and he will be really old.
Might have to send him a link to a web site for the old folks home!
Happy Birthday Carlos! I hope you still have all your hot air to blow out those candles!

Guess I do remember all the old shows!. I AM OLD! We ( I and Carlos) could have the same room in the old folks home together!

My Mom used to cut chicken, chop eggs and spread mayo on the same cutting board with the same knife and no bleach, but we didn't seem to get food poisoning.
My Mom used to defrost hamburger on the counter AND I used to eat it raw sometimes, too. Our school sandwiches were wrapped in wax paper in a brown paper bag, not in icepack coolers, but I can't remember getting e.coli
Almost all of us would have rather gone swimming in the lake instead of a pristine pool (talk about boring), no beach closures then.
The term cell phone would have conjured up a phone in a jail cell, and a pager was the school PA system.
We all took gym, not PE... and risked permanent injury with a pair of high top Ked's (only worn in gym) instead of having cross-training athletic shoes with air cushion soles and built in light reflectors. I can't recall any injuries but they must have happened because they tell us how much safer we are now.
Flunking gym was not an option... even for stupid kids! I guess PE must be much harder than gym.
Speaking of school, we all said prayers and sang the national anthem, and staying in detention after school caught all sorts of negative attention.
We must have had horribly damaged psyches. What an archaic health system we had then. Remember school nurses? Ours wore a hat and everything.
I thought that I was supposed to accomplish something before I was allowed to be proud of myself.
I just can't recall how bored we were without computers, Play Station, Nintendo, X-box or 270 digital TV cable stations.
Oh yeah... and where was the Benadrylandsterilization kit when I got that bee sting? I could have been killed!
We played 'king of the hill' on piles of gravel left on vacant construction sites, and when we got hurt, Mom pulled out the 48-cent bottle of Mercurochrome (kids liked it better because it didn't sting like iodine) and then we got our butt spanked.
Now it's a trip to the emergency room, followed by a 10-day dose of a $49+ bottle of antibiotics, and then Mom calls the attorney to sue the contractor for leaving a horribly vicious pile of gravel where it was such a threat.
We didn't act up at the neighbor's house either because if we did, we got our butt spanked there and then we got our butt spanked again when we got home.
I recall the kid from next door coming over and doing his tricks on the front stoop, just before he fell off. Little did his Mom know that she could have owned our house. Instead, she picked him up and swatted him for being such a goof. It was a neighborhood run amuck.
To top it off, not a single person I knew had ever been told that they were from a dysfunctional family. How could we possibly have known that?
We needed to get into group therapy and anger management classes? We were obviously so duped by so many societal ills, that we didn't even notice that the entire country wasn't taking Prozac! How did we ever survive?

Mbube
Mbube in Zulu for "Lion". The song the Lion Sleeps Tonight was first recorded by Solomon Linda and his group called the Evening Birds in 1939.
It refers to an old legend in Africa about a king, who was known as Chaka The Lion. Legend says, Chaka The Lion didn't die when Europeans took over the country; he simply went to sleep, and he'll wake up some day.
Always liked the song and love it even more since I have seen where the lion sleeps in Africa.

A Wedding
I have a wedding on Saturday for a friends daughter.
Each time I plan out the day and service with the couple getting ready for that big day I think of my wedding and that great day in my life.
A place, a time and some words that have change my life for the better.
The Rings, a tux, a dress, family and friends.
We are getting close to that 29Th year in September. I am are old! Tricia is the same!
To have and to hold--done that!
From that day forward--done that!
For better for worst--done that! Many times!
For richer, for poorer--done that! Most of it poorer.
In sickness and in Health--done that!
To love and to Cherish--doing that!
Till death do us part--not there yet!

Gift Cards
Lets plan a day around those gift cards that each of us have around the house. I and Tricia place all our cards in a Pleasant Holidays folder she got a few years ago going to Hawaii. It’s a daughter-mother thing they have done a couple of times and if I would let her it would be yearly. We place that folder in her car and whenever we are out, we might use them. Only problem is that we forget we have them under the seat.
Here is my day with just Gift cards I have now and nothing else:
1. Start off the morning at McDonalds—get an Egg McMuffin with the first card.
2. I would drive thru Starbucks and get Tricia a Mocha-Latte -ice something. You can tell I am not into Starbucks. I only go there with a free card.
3. I would stop by Best Buy, walk the computer isles drooling and dreaming and then pick up something in the music isle for the road trip.
4. I would stop and full up my gas tank with the $25.00 dollar gift card from Shell. Dreaming some more here. If Gas keeps going up I want them to fill my tank for me like the good old days. Fill it up sir? Check your oil and tires? Put water in your radiator? Clean your windshield? Get you a coca-cola in a bottle for 25 cent?
5. We have some time to kill before lunch so we would stop at Borders and read some books. Why use my gift card when I can read all the books while I am at Borders. It’s a great Library!
6. I would take Tricia out to Lunch at Black Angus. Order a steak, salad, baked potato with just butter, with an Ice Tea. A-1 sauce please!
7. We would go to The Cheesecake Factory and get dessert. She would have plain cheesecake with one of the following Raspberries, blackberries, blueberries. By the way, Linda Zastrow and her family went to Oak Glenn on Friday to pick Blackberries. Wonder if she will bring us some to church? I would just have a brownie, I do not like cheesecake.
8. We then would stop at Ralph grocery store to pick up some snacks for #9. Hot tamales, Look bar, M & M’s. Tricia would get everything else.
9. We would drive to the AMC Theaters at the TYLER Mall (old name for an old man, set in my ways) and see Black Night at a decent time. Not in the middle of the night.
10. After the movie would go to the Pro Bass Shop and pick up a few hooks for the next time Dan takes me out to Diamond Lake. I heard that he might be getting a boat? There sure are a lot of rumors about Dan and Terry going around. You would think that they we going steady or something?
11. We would now stop at dinner at Red Lobster because we were talking about fish in item # 10.
12. After dinner, dessert again at Cold Stone. I would have one scoop of Black Walnut and one of Butter Pecan. Tricia would have something with pieces in it, she likes the crunch.
13. Then we would go down to the Marriott in Tijuana and spend the night because we need a rest from the Gift Cards we all have in the United States.
14. Right before we went to sleep at night we would call our kids with the $20.00 Prepaid phone card and tell everyone “Good Night”. I would also call the church and tell them I would be taking off the next day because we have to play with the kids at Siempre.
What a day that would be!

2008 Summer Olympic Games
I love to watch the Olympic! Just wish all the channels would cover it like when the President makes a speech. All channels, all day coverage. They should make that a new law!
